When are the Easter holidays?

The Easter holidays fall between the spring and summer terms and usually last about two weeks, in late March or April. Many councils build the holidays around Easter, so that Good Friday and Easter Monday fall within them. Some councils use a fixed spring break instead, for example the first two weeks of April, regardless of when Easter falls. In those years Easter may fall partly outside the school holidays.

Spring holidays in Scotland and Northern Ireland

In Scotland the break is often called the spring holidays and also lasts about two weeks, usually in early April. As Easter Monday is not a bank holiday in Scotland, councils have more freedom in setting the dates. In Northern Ireland, schools have an Easter break, usually including Good Friday and Easter Monday, which are both bank holidays there.

Tips for the Easter holidays

The Easter weekend is one of the busiest of the year for travel, as many adults also have Good Friday and Easter Monday off. Prices for flights and holiday homes are often higher. If your dates are flexible, the week that doesn't include the Easter weekend can be quieter.

Because councils don't all follow Easter, families with children at schools in different areas may find their holidays only partly overlap. Compare the dates in the table above.

Frequently asked questions

How long are the Easter holidays?

Usually about two weeks, in late March or April.

Are the Easter holidays always around Easter?

Not always. Many councils build the break around Easter, but some use a fixed spring break, so Easter can fall partly outside it.
